Christian
fraternities and sororities unite for cooperative ministry
Feburary

Baltimore,
Md.- Alpha Nu Omega Christian Fraternity and Sorority,
Inc., Delta Psi Epsilon Christian Sorority, Inc. and Men of God
Christian Fraternity, Inc., three Christian, fraternal organizations
have joined forces to form the United Council of Christian Fraternities
and Sororities, Inc. (UCCFS), a national alliance dedicated to
cooperative ministry and leadership training. Founded October 2006,
UCCFS allows member organizations to better fulfill their missions
of service on college campuses and surrounding communities across
the country.
The leadership
of Alpha Nu Omega, Delta Psi Epsilon and Men of God first met in
August 2006 to discuss forming a united council in order to combine
resources, provide leadership and become a greater force on the campuses
and in the communities of the member organizations. From that single
meeting at the Sheraton Oceanfront Hotel in Virginia Beach, Va.,
during Alpha Nu Omega’s 2006 national convention, these well-established
ministries made history by creating the first council geared toward
supporting Christian fraternities and sororities.
“What
we have begun is something that traditional Christian organizations
and churches have been trying to do for a long time,” said Bryan
Miller, national president of Men of God Christian Fraternity. “We
have realized that we are better together than we can ever be separately.”
National
presidents Curtis M. Brown of Alpha Nu Omega, Vila-Sheree Watson of
Delta Psi Epsilon and Bryan Miller joined by Visionary Founder Shirley
Russell of Alpha Nu Omega sat down to discuss the purpose, focus and
vision of the council. Based on notes released from the meeting, the
council will serve several purposes. First, the council will unite Christian
fraternities and sororities for the purpose of working together to have
a greater impact on the member organizations’ campuses and communities.
Second, the council will give legitimacy to each member organization
among peers and as the organizations navigate through ministerial and
university systems. Finally, the council will provide leadership training
and counsel to the organization officers in an attempt to train effective
and efficient leaders in the kingdom of God.
“I
was truly honored and humbled by the meeting,” said Miller. “The
dedication, focus and prominence of the presidents of the organizations
represented were truly amazing. Being able to sit with others of like
mind all coming together for a common goal greater than any one organization
was a blessing.”
“We
are establishing the next great move of God and I know that all persons
in the room will do whatever is necessary to bring this vision to pass,”
commented Brown. “Cooperative ministry that will glorify God is
what we are trying to accomplish.”
“The
ministry is being started at the right time. It is important that we
follow God’s direction at the exact time he is telling us to move,”
stated Russell. “Our desire was to have all interested fraternities
and sororities in the room at the same time however, not everyone could
attend. Despite that, it was important that we continue to follow God’s
direction and answer his call.”
Watson
said, “It was an honor meeting those with the same goals in mind.
UCCFS will allow us to better develop our programs, support one another
and help us establish ourselves among more recognizable Greek-lettered
organizations. I know with our collective resources and their cooperative
use, we will establish something that will truly glorify God and minister
to the kingdom of God.”
The first
major event for UCCFS is slated for August 8-12, 2007 in Greensboro,
North Carolina as the member organizations host “Created to be
One,” their inaugural joint national convention. The convention
will feature powerful seminars, opportunities for training, unifying
fellowship and more! The event will be the first of its kind specifically
tailored for Christian fraternities and sororities. The convention gives
member organizations a chance to learn leadership skills, network with
like-minded individuals from across the country and fellowship with
fellow brothers and sisters.
